Being a teen minimalist.

Many teenagers may think that it is nearly impossible to be a minimalist while being a teenager. I will tell you right now that it is possible, I don’t even think that it is that hard. I am a 14 year old teenage minimalist and I think that any teenager should become one. There are some obstacles but after all the goods outweigh the bad’s (tremendously) and it will make you happier about your life.

Being a minimalist is not weird. It just means that you are not always wanting things. This can be hard for some teenagers to break out of the feeling of always wanting stuff. I do think that it is possible for any and every teenager that tries. You kind of have to change the way you think a little bit. Instead of thinking “That looks cool, I want it” you need to start thinking “Do I really need this thing or will it just waste my money?” or “Will I get enough use out of this product?” or “Is this thing worth ____ hours of my time?” These are just a few of the questions that you should ask yourself before you make your next purchase.

Some of the obstacles that I have faced are when my friends talk about some of the things that they have that I don’t have. But really you need to just ask yourself the questions that I stated in the last paragraph. You just have to break free from the norm. Your friends will get it. When you become a minimalist your start having a new purpose in your life. Now your purpose goes from “How can I make this money to buy this new thing?” to “What can I do with this extra time that interests me and that I am passionate about?” Wouldn’t you way rather be asking the second question that the first.

You can accomplish so many things when you are a minimalist. You have all the extra time or money to do whatever you want. Wouldn’t it be more fun to spend your money on experiences rather than things. Wouldn’t you rather go to a concert or to a baseball game than get whatever it is you have been wanting.

Just because you are a minimalist doesn’t mean that you own less than 50 things. It also doesn’t mean that you can’t buy anything new. You can do whatever you want when you are a minimalist. Minimalism is just and idea that if you pair down all your excess stuff and don’t buy what you don’t need than you will be happier.

  1. Respect. At the age of 14 I did not have such deep thoughts. Keep it up! 🙂 Minimalism is great. I don’t if you know Leo Gura from Actualized.org, but he has a great video on lifestyle minimalism, which I highly recommend.
